Tumbly's Getting Rumbly

Thursday's Menu:

Butterball turkey - I'm a traditionalist.

Bread stuffing - I'm a New Englander.

Mashed Potatoes - I'm a glutton for anything involving cream, butter, salt and pepper.

Butternut Squash - Flutterbug's favorite vegetable. Oddly enough.

Pan gravy - the real thing, learned from my mom and her dad.

Peas - pretty much just for looks.

Watergate salad - an acquired taste, but addictive after a year or two.

Cranberry sauce - because no turkey dinner is complete without it.

Crusty rolls - because they were free, from Victory Home.

Pumpkin pie - hoo boy, now I'm getting really hungry.

Chocolate cream pie - Dad & Flutterbug's fave.

How 'bout you? Any unusual food planned? Any delectable dishes to share?

Talk about being hungry -- you did it!! What on earth is Watergate Salad??? Maybe your answer will be a blog subject for the future!
Green peas -- they were definitely not part of any thanksgiving dinner in my history. Peas were a late spring and early summer veggie
that were not very good canned, and
freezing was not "invented" yet.
However, who needs 'em for Thanks-giving anyway, what with the fall crops from the garden: mashed potatoes, squash and turnips, plus sweet boiled onions, celery sticks and fresh pressed apple cider for the beverage.
AArrgghh! I've given myself your
"tumbly rumblies"!!!

I forgot to mention the fruit cocktail served in the cut glass sherbert stemware at the beginning of the meal, and the sideboard with
stuffed dates, figs, olives, mixed nuts (to be cracked and picked out while the lively table conversa-
tion went on, endlessly for a little kid it seemed!), and Aunt Etta's inevitable plate of chocolates and homemade fudge.
Does this all bring on good "rumblies" for anyone?

Yum! I love olives (both green and black) and since I love dates, I'm sure the stuffed ones would be delicious - what were they stuffed with?

Watergate salad is a mixture of crushed pineapple, marshmallows, cool whip, pecans, and pistachio pudding mix. I think I've made it at mom's before for a holiday meal. I wasn't sure about it at first, but now I love it!

Remember the Thanksgiving that we were visiting you in NH and we cooked duck? or was it goose...

Stuffed dates: I used the large Mejool(sp?)dates. Cut
them lengthwise (not all the way through). Be sure
to remove the pit, then lay
half walnut meats in the crevass, squeeze the date gently around the walnuts, and springle, rub or roll the dates in a light coating
of powdered confectioner's sugar. This last step takes away the stickiness of
the dates to the fingers, and tastes good, too. Enjoy!
