Senses & Sensibility, Part 1

I find the clickety-click of dog toenails on the floor in the night a comforting sound.

I spend a lot of time lying in bed wide awake. And I hear a lot of sounds. Love the dog toenails, hate the yowling of the neighbor's pitbull in the alley.

Some sounds are my night-time friends: the clunk of the radiator, the whiffling snore of my husband of 23 years, the low hum of the air purifier,

Kiki hawking up her nightly furball.

People have suggested that I use earplugs at night, but I LIKE to be able to hear.

How else will I know if someone is up to mischief outside the house?

How else will I know if a tornado is coming?

How else will I hear Reveille floating over the wind at 8:00 and 8:05 in the morning?

Yes, I am sometimes still in bed at 8:00 and 8:05 in the morning.

But then, I am sometimes still awake and listening to dog toenails at 1:00 in the morning.

I like hearing the cats padding around at night, or softly breathing close by -- it means no one has broken in and wreaked havoc on their little hearts while stealthily stealing the silver. I like hearing the wind howl and the rain pound, because it means I'm safe inside, and nobody would feel like breaking in during all that mess, so I sleep better.
